🚨 What’s at Stake?

The Caspian Sea is shrinking. Rapid shallowing threatens ecosystems, regional economies, and millions of lives.

The High Caspian Week 2025 brings together scientists, journalists, artists, citizens, and decision-makers for a week of urgent dialogue, creative action, and international solidarity.
🎯 Our Goal

To unite civil society, government, media, science, and culture to confront the region’s most pressing ecological crisis — the disappearing Caspian Sea — and launch a sustainable, long-term rescue strategy.

🗓️ Program Overview

📍 11 August 2025 — Astana

Opening Conference: Caspian Ecology — Challenges & Solutions

Plenary sessions, panels, expert talks featuring scientists, policymakers, oil companies & civic voices.

Topics include:

  • Scientific overview: climate and human-induced causes of the Caspian’s desiccation
  • Regional impact: ecosystem collapse, economic disruption, and social consequences
  • Global lessons: case studies of restoring inland water bodies in other countries
  • The urgent need for new national and regional policy frameworks for the Caspian

Expected outcomes:

  • A joint statement proposing concrete actions, paving the way for the “10 Steps to Save the Caspian”
  • Launch of an expert platform for Caspian monitoring and analytics (SCS × Transparent World Caspian)
  • Engagement of key national and international media outlets, global organizations, and influential public figure.

Voices for the Sea: Caspian Talks

Save the Caspian Sea, in collaboration with Azamat Sarsenbayev, is hosting a special event for friends of the Caspian in the spirit of the famous Talks format.

Join us to explore the story of a sea that is vanishing before our eyes.

The Short, personal talks (7–10 min) from activists, scientists, youth, citizens, creatives.

Themes:
  • Living with the Caspian
  • “What I can do”
  • Artists, poets & influencers for the sea

Special film festival: The Disappearing Sea

A documentary film series about the Caspian Sea that fully captures and reveals the scope of the crisis to its audience.

As part of the screening, the premiere of Azamat Sarsenbayev’s new film about the Caspian Sea is scheduled.

Media Forum: Voice of the Caspian (in partnership with Lada.kz and dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Lada.kz News agency)

Sessions for journalists, editors, bloggers, PR & media strategists

Topics include:

  • How to talk about climate without being boring
  • New language of eco-anxiety
  • Media as political leverage

Presentation: 10 Steps to Save the Caspian

By ecologists, legal experts, economists, and activists

Contents:
  • Urgent and mid-term actions
